The Complete Guide

How Georgia DMV Fees Are Calculated in 2026

Georgia replaced traditional sales tax and annual ad valorem tax with a unique system in 2013: the Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT). You pay 7% of the vehicle's fair market value once at the time of purchase or title transfer — and that's it for taxes. No annual property tax, no sales tax.

Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) — 7%

The TAVT is 7% of the vehicle's fair market value as determined by the Georgia Department of Revenue. This is a one-time fee paid at registration. It replaces both:

Private sales use DOR fair market value For private used vehicle purchases, TAVT is calculated on the DOR's assessed value (typically close to book value), not necessarily your actual purchase price.

Annual registration fees

After paying TAVT, annual costs are much simpler: $20 base tag fee plus county fees. Most Georgians pay $50–$90/year total for renewal.

County ad valorem tax

Vehicles registered before March 1, 2013 still pay the old annual ad valorem system. For post-2013 registered vehicles on the TAVT system, no annual property tax applies.

Georgia EV

Electric vehicles pay TAVT at the same 7% rate. There is currently no EV registration surcharge in Georgia (unlike TX, OH, IL).

Georgia DMV fee questions

TAVT (Title Ad Valorem Tax) is a one-time 7% tax on the fair market value of your vehicle, paid when you register it for the first time. It replaces sales tax and annual property tax. For a $30,000 vehicle, TAVT is $2,100.
Vehicles registered after March 1, 2013 pay TAVT once and then only a small annual tag fee (~$20) plus county fees. No recurring property tax. Older vehicles still on the pre-2013 system pay annual ad valorem tax.
About $50–$90/year for most drivers: $20 base tag fee + county fees. If you've already paid TAVT, there's no annual property tax on your vehicle.
Georgia charges $18 for a certificate of title.
As of 2026, Georgia does not charge an additional EV registration surcharge (unlike Texas, Ohio, Illinois, and other states). EVs pay the same 7% TAVT and standard annual tag fees.
Register at your county tag office. Bring your title (or TAVT receipt if from a dealer), proof of insurance, and Georgia emissions test certificate if required (required in metro Atlanta counties).
Emissions inspection is required in 13 metro Atlanta counties for model year 1996 and newer vehicles. No statewide annual safety inspection is required.
